one question posed by a special gathering of 10 top local women leaders for a March 13 seminar marking Women's History Month (snow date March 20).
Hosted by the Camden County Historical Society in their Boyer Auditorium, the "Camden County Women's Voices -- Past, Present and Future" seminar is designed to inspire women of all ages. The event, which runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., is open to the public. The event is sponsored by Holman Automotive, 1st Colonial National Bank and TD Bank.
Annual theme
Each year the National Women's History Project chooses a theme for the March commemoration of women's achievements and potential. This year it's "Writing Women Back Into History" because, as the NWHP notes, "It often seems that the history of women is written in invisible ink. Even when recognized in their own times, women are frequently left out of the history books."
In that spirit, the Historical Society has invited some of the area's most remarkable women to an afternoon gathering to discuss their own history and the roles they play in shaping Camden County's history.
Panel members
Moderated by Philadelphia Inquirer Metro columnist Monica Yant Kinney, the seminar's participants include:
- Linda Rohrer, businesswoman and civic leader
- Capt. Meredith Austin, first female commander of the U.S.Coast Guard's Delaware Bay Sector
- Dr. Anne Rosenberg, dedicated breast surgeon and a South Jersey "Top Doc" since 1994
- Pastor Vivian Tan, director of a program for at-risk city children
- The Honorable Patricia Egan Jones, Camden County Surrogate
- Riletta L. Cream, Freeholder and respected Camden educator
- Renee Winkler, Courier-Post reporter
- Evelyn Robles-Rodriguez, Director of Cooper Cancer Institute's Oncology Outreach Program
- Maia Farish, President's Liaison for University Affairs at Rowan University
As an ice breaker, the session starts off with each woman revealing one little-known fact about herself. The audience will be surprised to learn who was THE Temple Owl in the '60s; who studied acting at the same school as Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino; and who was a bay-scallop fisherman and shucker on Nantucket Island. Speakers will then discuss how they broke into their fields; what challenges they faced and what still surprises them; and what advice they have for women who follow in their footsteps.

Women's History Month Background:
Women's History Month is an annual tribute tracing back to the turn of the 20th century when events like the March 25, 1911, Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire helped galvanize U.S. women into an evolving political force. The observance became part of a larger movement that spread across industrialized countries and gave rise to International Women's Day.
In 1980 the U.S celebration of women's accomplishments and potential became official when a White House proclamation established the week of March 8 as National Women's History Week.
Seven years later, Congress broadened that to make March National Women's History Month.
